I have a computer at home and my child already knows how to use it, so why does my child need CompuChild? Many children know how to "play" on the computer. We teach children proper terminology, understanding of the functionality, proper use and care for the computer. Parents tell us that their child is more efficient and careful with their home computer after taking CompuChild classes. Also many parents find that their children begin to teach them about the computer!
What will my child learn? Each CompuChild class introduces your child to a new Emphasis Point. Emphasis Points are skills and terminology that will help your child develop a better understanding of the computer and it’s functionality. Emphasis points are taught in a logical progression to develop your child’s ability to understand and operate the personal computer. Your child will also be given a thorough review of past emphasis points. Our technology curriculum is taught through utilizing educational software. By keeping your child’s progress reports you will have an ongoing record of what they are learning.
Is there a registration fee? We never charge a registration fee! We work hard to keep our classes affordable.
How do I pay for class? Watch for our CompuChild envelope in your child’s cubby or folder at school. Just put your cash or check made out to CompuChild in the envelope and return it to the school on or before the day of the class. Your child's location may have other payment options. Please check with your local CompuChild Program Director.
Do you use lesson plans? Yes! Our lesson plans have been developed from over 20 years of computer experience in collaboration with educators who understand the way that young children learn. We teach technology emphasis points, word-processing, spreadsheets and multi-media.
How is the class taught? As recommended by the National Association for the Education of Young Children, we use small group instruction, which has proven to be the most effective method for teaching technology to young children. With small group instruction, the CompuChild teacher can focus and direct all children during the CompuChild class. This method effectively utilizes hands-on instruction, observation, repetition, peer encouragement, teamwork, reasoning and logical thinking. Your child will not become bored or lose focus, but will gain a solid foundation of computer knowledge and application.
What equipment do you use? We use personal computers with flat screen monitors. Your child will also be exposed to printers, laptops, scanners, digital cameras, various tracking devices and more! Your child will most likely be using a Personal Desktop Computer in school and the knowledge gained through CompuChild classes will give your child a head start.
How much actual keyboard/mouse time does my child get during a class? Because our classes are structured and captivating, children learn both by doing and through observation and encouragement. Research supports this teaching method as developmentally appropriate technology instruction. In fact, because we are constantly taking turns through the entire class, this setting teaches many important social skills, as well as, it provides one-on-one encouragement and instruction. You are welcome to observe a class at anytime.
Is it important for my child to attend every class? Our program is progressive, bringing your child through the logical steps it takes for them to understand and use the personal computer as a tool, not a toy. Although it is wonderful for children to come to every class from the beginning, we welcome your child to begin attending classes at any time.
Is my 2-year-old ready to learn on the computer? Many two year olds attend CompuChild classes. They are taught in smaller groups for a shorter amount of time to adapt to their attention span. As with all of our classes, we choose age-appropriate software while still focusing on our technology curriculum. If you are uncertain about your child, we recommend you speak with your local Program Director specifically about your child to determine if they are ready for computer class.
What if CompuChild classes are not offered at my child’s center? Check our website to see if there is a local CompuChild Program Director serving your area, and contact them directly. They will make contact with your center. If there are no Program Directors in your area, perhaps you or someone you know would be interested in starting the CompuChild program in your area. Give us a call at 1-800-619-5437.
From Schools and Child Care Centers
We already have computers at our location, why would we need your classes? Besides the many benefits to the children already mentioned child care centers and schools with computers on location find that the children are more responsible and work more effectively on their computers with CompuChild training. Our program can save you time because the children no longer need as much assistance while working on the computer. Plus our program can save money on repairs because the children are more respectful and understand the importance of proper care and use.
Do we need to provide you with staff or equipment to teach your classes? We make offering CompuChild classes as easy as possible. We provide the instructors, the equipment, the lesson plans and the fun. We simply ask for a small area to set up our equipment and the use of an electrical outlet.
Do we collect the class fees from the children? Again, we try to make the process as easy as possible for you. We provide envelopes to all the students and a drop box for collecting payments. You do not have to be involved with collections.
How can I start CompuChild classes at my location? Contact your local Program Director or call 1-800-619-5437.
